What is affiliate marketing

I was asked by one of my business mentoring students this morning about affiliate marketing. He had heard it can be a great online business model but wasn’t really sure what it was.

I’ve been doing this so long that I sometimes forget not everyone knows what all these business models are or how to do them.

So, instead of just giving him the answer, I decided to share it with you too in case you have the same question…

What is Affiliate Marketing?

The most basic definition is that it’s the process of promoting the products and/or services of other people or companies for which you earn commissions on sales.

Essentially you find a product or service you like in a niche you have an interest in, and promote it to others via any number of different marketing channels, which can include; SEO, PPC, blogging, social media, display ads, email lists, networking, and many others.

You then earn a certain percentage of the profit for each sale you get.

This is a win/win/win situation for all:

  • The product owner is happy because they got a new sale that they probably would not have gotten otherwise.
  • You are happy because you made money.
  • The customer is happy because they got something they were wanting or needing.

There are affiliate programs for just about any niche or industry you can possibly think of, so there’s almost always something to promote. That makes starting an affiliate business quite simple.

One of the best things about affiliate marketing is that you don’t have to invest all the time and effort into creating a product/service to sell or deal with updates, customer service, refunds, and all that other stuff nobody likes to do.

You can literally start selling something as an affiliate today if you really want to!

Here are 2 things I have personally found to be very important for success:

1) I only recommend products & services that I know are high quality.

These are things that either I have actually used and benefited from myself, or at the very least, I am quite familiar with the creators of it and know them to have a solid reputation of exceptional quality.

If I’m not 100% confident in it or I don’t absolutely feel it will positively benefit people than I will not affiliate with the company, individual, product, or service.

2) I rarely, if ever, straight up tell someone to purchase something. I recommend things based on my own experiences, or those of people I know and trust, and in the context of what I am doing or discussing. The decision is ultimately up to each individual on whether they feel the product is for them or not.

You don’t have to follow the same rules as I do in order to become a successful affiliate marketer. However, I feel it is very important to your success as well as to the vendors and customers for you to be honest, ethical, and upfront in your affiliate marketing efforts.

In my opinion I love affiliate marketing, made a bunch of money as an affiliate marketer.

The awesome part is that there are automated sales systems you can leverage that does 90% of the sales process for you.

The 10% is simply putting the sales message in front of the right people at the right time. Once you learn a simple skill of advertising you can literally scale to a six figure income faster than you ever thought possible.

Let me share with you a secret about affiliate marketing no one else wants you to know.

If you want to become an affiliate marketer and make a lot of money doing it, just think of yourself as a “Problem Solver”.

Most people are searching for products to improve their life, depending on what product you are promoting make a list of all the benefits, put on your thinking cap and make a list of people who would be most likely to buy the product you are promoting and get your sales message in front of the people who most likely want to buy what you are selling.

Here is a little example that will help you understand.

Let’s say you are selling flip-flops.

Who do you think would be the most likely people to purchase flip-flops?

I would target people who live near a pool, lake, or ocean.

You can even get more specific and target people who are going to be going on vacation to a beach.

The more specific you are the easier it is to sell.

It would be a waste of time trying to sell flip-flops to an Eskimo in Alaska wouldn’t it?

Another real important factor about affiliate marketing is the amount of money you make. Over the past few years I been promoting high ticket sales and make anywhere from $500-$1.500 per sale.

If you have been thinking about becoming an affiliate marketer, I’d say just do it. It was the best decision I have ever made.

There are millions of products and services to promote.

But if you want to get get access to an automated sales system that does 90% of the sales process for you and earn high ticket commissions.
